I saw as much of 'Be Kind Rewind' as I could last night. I tried to watch it through but simply couldn't, it's that bad. In fact the movie is so bad it's embarrassing.
I know I sound cynical, but get this, the plot begins with a ludicrous, overlong and boring premise involving a Jack Black acting out a gross stereotype, a conspiracy nut wanting to attack an electricity company because they control 'the power', he convinces his insipid store keeper friend (Mos Def) to join him, in the process Jack gets himself horribly electrocuted andmiraculously survives. The next day he visits Mos's video shop and unwittingly wrecks all the VHS movies due to his electricized body current (?), (for some reason these guys haven't heard of DVD's). The video store is being looked after by Mos while the owner (Danny Glover?) goes traveling. In yet another gross exaggerated stereotype Danny is seen riding a box car full of black people talking about the 'american dream' and playing harmonicas for good measure..
I'm bored already.. this is all to set up the idea that the two now have to make their own remakes of classics such as Ghost Busters and Rush Hour for impatient customers who may dob them in to the owner for messing up if they don't deliver.
So they do the remakes to be hones, they're tedious with only a few good ideas thrown in. The whole movie is tedious actually, the acting is poor, exaggerated, ad libbed mumbling, more so in the move than in the remakes.
No matter how many chances I gave the movie I just couldn't enjoy myself.
Essentially I just couldn't believe any of it. I know we are expected to make some leaps of logic to enjoy movies sometimes, in fact movies that don't make sense are some of my favorites, I love the Naked Lunch and The Neverending Story, but this just asks way too much.
I admire that Michel Gondry is trying to make a statement about the beauty of analogue and community creativity and support, but he's done it in such a gross and predictable manner that it makes the whole message stink.
Mind you, some people will probably LOVE this film. I thought "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind' was puke, (not nearly as bad as BKRW of course) however it's on every persons top films of all times list. So maybe I'm just not 'getting it'.
But I doubt it.
Score: D - (Make your own film instead. Or clean your room and wash the dishes. Guaranteed to be more fun.)
